A good dressage horse combines three correct paces, a trainable temperament and a body that can carry collection for years. Whether you are looking for a young horse with potential, a schoolmaster to learn on or a Grand Prix partner, EquiMarket brings together dressage horses for sale from across Europe in one place.
What to look for
Paces. Look for a clear four-beat walk, an elastic trot with natural self-carriage, and an uphill canter with good balance. Paces can be improved with training, but the walk in particular is hard to change.
Rideability. A horse that is willing, focused and easy to ride is often a better buy than a more spectacular horse you cannot ride well. Ride the horse yourself, ideally more than once.
Level and training. Ask what the horse is confirmed at, not only what it has been shown at. Ask the seller’s rider to show you the movements the horse knows, then try them yourself.
Competition record. National federations and the FEI publish results. A record of consistent scores tells you more than one high mark.
Soundness. Dressage puts particular demands on the hocks, back and front feet. Agree a thorough pre-purchase examination with your own vet, and decide together whether X-rays are needed and which views to include.
Breeding
Most European dressage horses come from warmblood studbooks such as the Hanoverian, Oldenburg, Westphalian, KWPN, Danish Warmblood and Swedish Warmblood studbooks. Use the pedigree as a guide, but judge the horse in front of you. A famous sire does not guarantee a talented offspring.
Choosing by stage
Young horses (3–5 years): lower prices and room to shape the horse yourself, but more risk and time.
Developing horses (6–9 years): established basics and early competition results.
Schoolmasters: experienced horses that can teach a rider the movements. They are often older, so a careful vetting is especially important.
Buying safely
Use a written contract, pay through a traceable method, and do not pay a deposit before you have seen the horse and the vetting is done. If you are buying abroad, check the transport and health paperwork in our guides. Our free horse purchase contract template and vetting checklist can help.
