A reliable trailer or horsebox gives you the freedom to compete, train, hack out and get to the vet when you need to. EquiMarket lists horse trailers and horseboxes for sale from private sellers and dealers across Europe, from single-horse trailers to larger multi-horse lorries.
Before you buy: what you are allowed to tow or drive
Driving licence rules decide what you can tow and drive, so check them first. In the EU, the categories that matter for most horse owners are B, B96 and BE, plus categories C1 and C for heavier horseboxes. The weight limits depend on the vehicle, the trailer and their combined maximum authorised mass. Check your own licence and the rules in your country with the national licensing authority. Check the towing capacity in your car’s registration documents too.
If you transport horses as part of a business, for example as a dealer or a professional transporter, the EU animal transport rules can also require a transporter authorisation and a certificate of competence. Read our guide on moving a horse between EU countries.
What to check on a used trailer
Floor. This is the most important safety check. Lift the mats and look for rot, cracks, soft spots or corrosion, especially under the area where the horse stands.
Ramp and doors. Check the hinges and springs, that the ramp lowers and lifts safely, and that the latches close firmly.
Partitions and breast bars. They should be secure, with quick-release mechanisms that work.
Chassis and coupling. Look for rust, damage and wear on the hitch.
Tyres. Check the tread and the date code on each tyre. Old tyres can fail even with good tread.
Brakes and lights. Test the overrun brake, the handbrake and every light.
Ventilation. Windows and vents should open and close properly.
Paperwork
Ask for the registration documents, service history and inspection certificates where your country requires them. Check that the chassis number matches the documents and that the trailer is not subject to finance or reported stolen, using the checks available in your country.
Horseboxes
Lorries add an engine, gearbox and living area to check. Have a mechanic inspect the vehicle. Check the payload too: once the horses, tack, water and passengers are on board, the vehicle must stay within its legal weight limit.
