Horses for sale in Germany

Horses for sale in Germany

Germany is one of Europe’s largest sport horse markets, home to several of the best-known warmblood studbooks and a busy calendar of riding horse auctions. On EquiMarket you can browse horses for sale across Germany, from foals and young horses to established dressage horses, show jumpers and eventers.

Germany’s main studbooks

Many German horses carry the papers of a regional breeding association. Among the best known are:

  • Hanoverian (Hannoveraner Verband, Verden)

  • Oldenburg (Oldenburger Verband, Vechta)

  • Westphalian (Westfälisches Pferdestammbuch, Münster)

  • Holsteiner (Holsteiner Verband, Elmshorn)

  • Trakehner (Trakehner Verband)

Each studbook runs its own breeding programme, inspections and, in many cases, auctions. The studbook name and brand are a quick guide to a horse’s background. The pedigree is still the more useful thing to study.

Private sale or auction?

Germany has a strong auction tradition. Breed societies and private auction houses hold sales in person and online through the year. Auctions offer transparency and a pre-selected collection. Private sales give you more time to try the horse and negotiate. Our guide to buying a horse at auction lists upcoming sales with verified dates.

Practical points for buyers

X-rays. The 2018 Röntgen-Leitfaden, a German radiography guideline, sets out a standard set of views for sound riding horses. Ask the seller which views are available and how recent they are. Have your own vet review them.

Contracts. Consumer protection rules can apply when you buy from a professional seller, and they differ from the rules for private sales. Get a written contract and check it with a local adviser.

Language. Passports and vet reports from German sellers are often in German. Ask for translations of the key points if you need them.

Transport. Moving a horse from Germany to another EU country needs an animal health certificate issued through TRACES, and the passport must travel with the horse. See our EU transport guide.
