The Netherlands is a small country with a big influence on the sport horse world. Dutch breeders, dealers and training yards supply horses to riders all over Europe and beyond. On EquiMarket you can browse horses for sale across the Netherlands, from young sport horses to Grand Prix prospects, Friesians and ponies.
What you will find
KWPN horses: the Royal Dutch Sport Horse studbook breeds riding horses for dressage and show jumping, as well as harness horses.
Friesians: the black Friesian horse, registered with the Friesian studbook (KFPS), is popular for dressage, driving and leisure riding.
Ponies: riding ponies for children and young riders, including Dutch-bred sport ponies.
Dealer and training yards: many Dutch yards specialise in producing young horses and preparing them for sale to foreign buyers.
Buying a horse in the Netherlands: practical points
Try the horse properly. Visit if you can, ride the horse more than once, and ask to see it jumped or worked by its regular rider.
Check the papers. Make sure the passport matches the horse, and check the breeding against the studbook’s online database where one is available.
Vetting. Agree the scope of the pre-purchase examination with your own vet before you go, including whether X-rays will be taken and which views. If the seller provides recent X-rays, ask for the original digital files.
Buying from a professional. If you buy from a dealer or training yard, consumer protection rules may apply and can differ from private sales. A written contract that sets out the price, the payment terms and when risk passes to you protects both sides.
Transport. A horse moving from the Netherlands to another EU country needs an animal health certificate issued through TRACES, and its passport must travel with it. For the UK and the US the rules are different. See our transport guides.
Selling in the Netherlands
Buyers from abroad expect a good video, clear breeding details and an honest description of the horse’s training and temperament. List on EquiMarket to reach buyers across Europe.
