Sweden has a strong riding culture and a well-organised breeding system, which makes it a good place to look for a sport horse or a family pony. On EquiMarket you can browse horses for sale across Sweden, from young prospects to experienced competition horses, and compare them with listings from the rest of Europe.
What you will find
Swedish Warmbloods (SWB): the national sport horse studbook, bred for dressage, show jumping and eventing.
Ponies: riding ponies for children and teenagers, including native breeds such as the Gotland pony.
Leisure and all-round horses: for trail riding, lessons and lower-level competition.
Imported horses: Swedish riders buy widely from Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark, so you will also see horses with European studbook papers.
Buying a horse in Sweden: practical points
Ask for the full history. Request the passport, vaccination records and competition results. National competition results can often be checked online.
Arrange an independent vetting. Agree the scope with your own vet, including any X-rays, before you travel to see the horse.
Moving the horse. Sweden is one of the countries that has told the European Commission it accepts registered horses from other EU countries without an animal health certificate, provided EU health conditions are met. Unregistered horses and horses moving to other countries still need the TRACES certificate. Read our guide to moving a horse between EU countries before you book a transporter.
Prices and currency. Swedish sellers usually price in Swedish kronor (SEK). If you pay in euros, agree the exchange rate and who pays the bank charges in your contract.
Selling a horse in Sweden
A good listing has clear photos, a short video under saddle, the horse’s breeding, and an honest description of its level and temperament. Buyers from abroad also want to know whether the horse has travelled before and whether X-rays are available. Listing on EquiMarket puts your horse in front of buyers in Sweden and across Europe.
