The right pony can give a child years of fun, confidence and learning. The wrong one can put them off riding. EquiMarket lists ponies for sale across Europe, from first ponies and lead-rein ponies to competition ponies for dressage, show jumping and eventing.
Choosing the right pony
Temperament first. For a young or nervous rider, a calm, forgiving pony matters more than looks or breeding. Ask how the pony behaves in traffic, with other horses, when it is caught, groomed, shod and loaded.
Size and weight. The pony should suit the rider’s height, weight and leg length, with some room to grow. Ask your instructor for advice.
Experience. A young rider usually needs an experienced pony. A young pony and a young rider learning together is rarely a good idea.
Purpose. Decide whether you want a fun all-rounder, a pony for Pony Club and local shows, or a competition pony. Prices and requirements are very different.
Popular types and breeds
Across Europe you will find native breeds and sport ponies. Examples include Welsh ponies and cobs, Connemaras, New Forest ponies, Shetlands, Haflingers, Fjords, Gotland ponies and German Riding Ponies. Many sport ponies are crosses bred for riding. Breed is only a guide. Each pony is an individual.
Try before you buy
Let the child ride the pony, with an experienced adult present
Ask to see the pony ridden by its current rider first
Visit more than once if you can, and see the pony caught from the field
Ask about any vices, such as bucking, napping or difficulty with the farrier
Health and vetting
Ponies can be prone to laminitis and weight gain, so ask about the pony’s diet, grazing and any history of laminitis. Arrange a pre-purchase vetting with your own vet, even for a cheaper pony. Our free vetting checklist helps you prepare.
Paperwork
Every pony must have a passport that matches it, including the microchip. Ask for vaccination records, and agree in writing what happens if the pony turns out to be unsuitable. Our horse purchase contract template works for ponies too.
