Show jumpers need scope, carefulness, rideability and the soundness to cope with years of jumping. EquiMarket brings together show jumpers for sale from across Europe, from young horses starting their careers to experienced horses jumping at international level.
What to look for
Technique and carefulness. Watch how the horse uses its front legs and back over a fence, and whether it respects the poles. Loose jumping videos of young horses show natural technique. Ridden rounds show how that translates under a rider.
Scope. Ask what heights the horse has jumped at home and in competition, and how easily it did so.
Rideability. A horse that is adjustable, straight and easy to turn is easier to win with. It is also easier to keep confident. Ride the horse yourself, ideally over a small course.
Temperament. Ask how the horse behaves at shows, in the warm-up, loading and in the stable.
Results. National federations publish competition results, and international results are on the FEI database. Look for consistency at the level you want to compete at, not one good day.
Soundness and vetting
Jumping puts heavy loads on the front feet, fetlocks, hocks and back. Agree the scope of the pre-purchase examination with your own vet, and decide together whether X-rays should be taken and which views. If the seller has recent X-rays, ask for the original digital files and have your vet review them. Read our guide to X-rays in a pre-purchase vetting.
Breeding
Many European show jumpers come from studbooks with strong jumping lines, such as Holsteiner, KWPN, BWP, Zangersheide, Selle Français, Oldenburg and Hanoverian. A good pedigree is a useful guide, but the horse in front of you matters more.
Choosing by stage
Young horses: lower prices and potential to grow, but more uncertainty.
Horses with a record: proven ability at a known level, priced accordingly.
Schoolmasters: experienced horses that help a rider move up, often older and worth a careful vetting.
Buying safely
Get a written contract that sets out the price, payment terms, the result of the vetting and when risk passes to you. Never pay the full price before you have the passport and the vet’s report. Our free contract template and vetting checklist can help.
